Landing Zone Information

The standard LZ

The landing Zone is located in Leidig Meadow. Landings outside of this meadow are not permitted. The landing area is a large meadow located west of the launch site on the valley floor just west of Yosemite Falls. The meadow is aprox. 1 mile west of the chapel. On the east end of the meadow is a walk bridge across the Merced river connecting the meadow to the Southside drive. There is a parking lot, picnic tables, and restroom facilities near the bridge. The target area for landing is the east end of the meadow. The break down area is near the paved trail leading across the bridge to the parking lot.

The alternate LZ

The west end LZ is intended to be used only when the east end is too wet. It is also in Leidig Meadow, on the opposite side from the standard LZ. Ask the monitor which to use to be sure you use the correct LZ for the conditions.

For the west end landing, the best approach is over the river with the final glide on the west end of the meadow. It is a very large area and should not be a problem for any pilot. The winds are normally calm but should be checked by each pilot regardless. The break down area is large enough for a full weekend of pilots and gliders. Retrieval vehicles should park at the end of Meadow Lane until gliders are ready for loading and then can proceed to the roadside just north of the breakdown area where there is adequate room to pull off of the road and load. No vehicles should park there for any period of time due to the traffic and potential environmental impact. However, we found no problem with getting 4 vehicles loading up and on their way.

The alternate LZ is in the center of the frame, where the gliders are landing towards the right. The is the "alternate" LZ. The standard LZ is in the bottom right corner, just above the number 16.

Another view, this one from directly above the LZ. Once again, Pilots are using the alternate LZ in this shot.
